Germany will be looking for revenge when they play Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2012, says Oliver Bierhoff.

Germany will be looking for revenge when they play Italy in the semi-finals of Euro 2012, says Oliver Bierhoff.

The two teams will face each other on Thursday in a tie which will bring back memories of the Azzurri’s heroic 2-0 win over Germany at their own World Cup in 2006.

“It’s nice to be up against Italy again,” Bierhoff, a German national team official, told the Gazzetta dello Sport. “German football has been waiting for revenge for some time.

“This time, though, we will be the favourites and today we are ahead of Italy,” added the former Ascoli, Udinese and Milan striker.

“It will be a well-balanced semi-final and a beautiful one, but we are aware that we will be able to win it. Saying that, Italy boss Cesare Prandelli is working really well.”

Prandelli replaced Marcello Lippi in the summer of 2010 after the reigning world champions were knocked out of the group phase at the South African World Cup.

Italy progressed into the last four last night after dominating England, but could only defeat them 4-2 on penalties.
