According to reports in Italy this evening, Rafa Benitez has turned down the offer to become Coach of Sampdoria, so they’re turning to Didier Deschamps.

The former Liverpool and Inter tactician had been in negotiations with the Genoa-based club for the last couple of weeks.

Sky Sport Italia suggest news from the Benitez camp is negative, as he is unconvinced by the idea of returning to Serie A for a newly-promoted side.

If Benitez does indeed reject the proposal to take over at Sampdoria, then the club is expected to turn its focus on to Deschamps.

The Frenchman knows Serie A football well due to his time at Juventus both as a player and a Coach.

Deschamps has been on the Olympique Marseille bench since May 2009.

It should be noted that Sampdoria already have a Coach, Beppe Iachini, whose contract was automatically extended when he secured promotion via the Serie B play-offs.

“As far as I know, I am the Sampdoria Coach. Nobody has told me anything,” confessed Iachini.
