Sampdoria have released a statement confirming they will not be hiring Rafa Benitez after negotiations over the last two weeks.

“Following the meeting held in London over the last few days and the consequent discussions between U.C. Sampdoria and Rafa Benitez, it is with reciprocal disappointment that the club and Spanish Coach have decided the time is not yet right for a collaboration.”

This leaves the door open for a future rapport between them, though, as it seems the biggest misgiving Benitez had was taking over a newly-promoted side.

Samp secured promotion via the Serie B play-offs and hoped to begin the new campaign with the former Liverpool and Inter manager in charge.

The statement confirming talks with Benitez are also a blow to current Coach Beppe Iachini, who still has a year left on his contract after achieving promotion.
