Mauro Zarate believes he needs and is capable of the ‘best season of my career’ next term, so as to forget recent nightmares.

After a falling out at Lazio last summer, the Argentine was made available for transfer, with Inter picking him up on an initial 12-month loan spell.

However,  that did not materialise further in light of a difficult season at San Siro, and the forward, who has been capped for his country at Under-20 level, is targeting a clean start this season, even though he is unsure which club that will be based from.

“I thought Inter would be better, that I would be playing for the League or the Champions League,” began the 25-year-old in reflection of last season.

“Instead, I came in at one for one of the worst years at the club and it could not have been worse. I was so sorry, but unfortunately it all went wrong.

“My future? Honestly, I just want a quiet year. A year filled with lots of goals, with motivation, with serenity.

“I think that a year like that is enough so as to regain national team hopes and to even change my career.

“I hope to have a great season, whether it is with Inter, Lazio or another team. I am ready for the best season of my career. I want to return to the national team, which is something I miss so much.”
