Ferrara grateful to FIGC

Ciro Ferrara has thanked the Italian Football Federation for his time with the Under-21 squad and their permission for him to join Sampdoria.

The tactician left his role with the Azzurrini at the end of last month to take the coaching position at newly-promoted Samp. In being presented to the Press today as their new tactician, the former Napoli and Juventus man reflected on the role FIGC have played in helping him reach this point.

“I took so much from FIGC. They called me to lead the Under-21s at a particular moment in my career, giving me the opportunity to regain motivation,” he told reporters gathered at the news conference.

“It was a necessary experience for me. I’m grateful for them allowing me to be able to leave to come and Coach at Sampdoria.

“I also thank Garrone for the opportunity here, I’m delighted. I said yes to Sampdoria for the seriousness of their project and almost immediately did I reach an agreement with Pasquale Sensibile.

“I hope to achieve the goals that this club aims for.”

Ferrara was also asked if former Juventus teammate Alessandro Del Piero would be joining his new club, as some rumours have suggested.

“Del Piero to Sampdoria? It’s pure fantasy football. For what I know, he does not want to wear another shirt [in Italy] after wearing Juventus’ for so many years.

“I wish to secure our main transfer objectives as soon as possible so as to work with a complete staff. Our ultimate goal is to remain in the League without any concerns.

“I want to identify the points in the team from which I can create a 4-3-3, which would be my ideal formation.”
