Zeman yet to make Totti decision

Roma boss Zdenek Zeman says he still hasn’t decided how he will use captain Francesco Totti in 2012-13.

Totti, 35, has been fielded as a central striker in recent years and the returning Czech tactician likes to deploy a mobile 4-3-3 system.

“Totti and I were together 13 years ago and that is a long time,” said Zeman who impressed in the Second Division last term with Pescara.

“I’ve seen him grow, but Totti is always Totti for me. He may not be what he was physically, but that is only normal.

“It’s too soon to talk about his position as I need to evaluate what we do as a team first. I have to do what is best for the side.”

Totti is the only survivor from Zeman’s last spell in the capital, but the Coach has worked with striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo in the past.

“Osvaldo is a much better player than he was during our time together at Lecce,” the former Foggia man added.

Zeman has been called into the Stadio Olimpico after Luis Enrique’s one season stint on the bench ended with the club failing to qualify for Europe.

“It is hard to talk about the problems of last season because I wasn’t here,” Zeman stated.

“Not being in the squad, it is difficult for me to make those evaluations. The problems could have been physical or mental.

“My objective? I want us to compete with the other sides – by that I mean with Inter, Milan and Juventus, but also Pescara.

“Everyone will start the season on a level playing field.”
