Alberto Aquilani reveals he “would’ve gladly taken a pay cut” in order to return to Roma, but instead begins again at Liverpool.

The midfielder has struggled since leaving his hometown club for €20m in 2009, suffering from a series of injuries and having loan spells at Juventus and Milan.

“I could’ve gone back to Roma last year and I would’ve gladly taken a pay cut for my club colours,” he told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.

He could well play this evening when Roma and Liverpool face off in a friendly at Boston’s Fenway Park at 23.30 UK time.

“Facing the Giallorossi is always a strong emotion for me. I have already played against Roma four times between Juve and Milan, but it’ll be a little strange doing so wearing a Liverpool jersey.”

Aquilani has kept a close eye on his beloved ‘Lupi’ even from England.

“Zdenek Zeman is the right choice for the revamp, even though I liked Luis Enrique.”
