Erik Lamela is confident Roma can play a part in the Scudetto race this season. “It’s not impossible, as only Juventus are superior.”

The Argentine had a strong debut campaign in Serie A and has high hopes for his first term under Coach Zdenek Zeman.

“We work really hard with Zeman. I’d never experienced anything like it before, but I am sure it will pay off. Roma will improve on last year’s results,” he told the Corriere dello Sport.

“The tactics represent a completely new way of staying on the field for me. At River Plate I was accustomed to waiting for the ball in every move, so it all went through my feet. At Roma it is very different.”

The Giallorossi finished seventh last term and failed to qualify for Europe, marking the end of the brief Luis Enrique reign.

“We were inconsistent,” continued Lamela. “The fault did not only lie with the Coach, but I really can’t explain what happened. We tried to play the same type of football every week, following Luis Enrique’s suggestions, but it didn’t always work.

“We have to fight for the top spots, because I think on paper only Juventus are superior. The Scudetto is one of my objectives. I know it isn’t easy to win straight away, but nothing is impossible.”

Roma have strengthened this summer with the arrival of Mattia Destro from Siena.

“Destro is a strong striker and has quality. I have seen him play and he can help us. I will give my all, day after day, and I don’t want us to set ourselves limits.”
