Padova’s 26-year-old defender Jonas Portin has been forced to retire after he was diagnosed with a heart defect.

The player showed some irregularities in pre-season medical tests and they were confirmed by specialists in Genoa.

“Jonas has a genetic defect in his heart,” revealed agent Roberto De Fanti.

“He is not considered suitable to play professional football.”

The Finnish defender had been in Italy since 2009 with Ascoli and then Padova.

Portin also notched up two goals and 21 caps for the Finnish Under-21 side.

It is reported Padova are hoping to give Portin a new career working within the club.

Medical tests have been stepped up even further in Italy after the tragic death of Piermario Morosini during a Pescara-Livorno Serie B game earlier this year.
