Zdenek Zeman is confident “Roma are competitive and I’m happy with the squad, even if we don’t bring in anyone else.”

The Giallorossi began their pre-season training camp in Austria this week, leaving behind players like Gabriel Heinze, Simone Perrotta and David Pizarro.

“The new players we brought in can do a great deal for Roma, so I am very happy with the transfer strategy,” said the Coach in his Press conference.

“I am already happy with the squad, even if we don’t bring in anyone else. Roma are competitive, although if we are to reinforce, then we can do so in every area of the team.

“Is it the strongest squad I’ve ever had in my career? I don’t feel like saying that quite yet, but it is certainly a great group of players.

“I have a lot of faith in this squad and I am convinced we can challenge anyone.”

Federico Balzaretti is the latest new arrival to Roma, joining the likes of Mattia Destro, Leandro Castan and Michael Bradley.

“I always speak to the directors before we embark on any transfer. I am very happy to have Balzaretti, as we managed to sign him where other clubs had failed.”

Zeman was also asked about rumours surrounding the future of Pablo Daniel Osvaldo and Maarten Stekelenburg.

“In my view Osvaldo is right now a first choice. He’s an important player and I always focus on important players.

“Stekelenburg is a fine goalkeeper and I never thought of selling him. He had a few problems in his first season, but remains an important ‘keeper.

“Heinze? It was my decision not to bring him to the training camp.”

Daniele De Rossi has once again been linked with Manchester City, but the more likely question is where he will fit into Zeman’s system.

“He is in good shape and I still have to decide on his tactical position, as it’ll depend on the opponents we face each time.”
