Alessandro Del Piero has thanked Gigi Buffon for dedicating Juventus’ Super Cup win to him and revealed how he experienced the win.

Del Piero left the Turin club this summer after 19 years a player and watched on as they defeated Napoli in extra time on Saturday in their first official game without him.

Responding to Buffon’s dedication of the win to him, the former captain reflected on how he felt watching his former teammates this weekend.

“On Saturday I travelled back in time. For the first time I returned to being a fan of Juventus, just a fan, after 20 years there. And as a fan I saw a great game, I leapt in front of the telly for the exciting outcome in extra time,” the former No 10 posted on his official site.

“The result takes greater significance in light of the value of the opponent, Napoli, who deserved to be there in Beijing and will certainly fight for the Scudetto next year.

“I had no need for confirmation, the relationship I built with my teammates is one of the things I am most proud of, and I’ve always been aware of it.

“But the dedication of a friend, Gigi, as sincere as him, I was really surprised and excited at the end of the first final without me after all these years.

“Thanks Gigi, I’m glad it was you that lifted the Cup, it is the result of the League that we dreamed of and worked for, for his embrace in the dressing room in Trieste without being able to say a word.

“I’m sure it won’t be the last Cup, Alessandro.”
