The Giallorossi surprised many by snapping up goalkeeper Mauro Goicoechea from Danubio, though Stekelenburg is in the squad for tomorrow’s Serie A opener. Click here for a match preview.

“At this moment I bring the players who I think that I can use. Borriello and Perrotta are not in my plans,” said the Coach during his Press conference.

“Will Stekelenburg start? I give my line-up tomorrow, not today. I think he’s one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, but that doesn’t mean we can’t play without him. I had already asked for Goicoechea while at Pescara, as I like the way he plays.”

Roma are among the wild cards for this season, as they have reinforced and do not have any European commitments.

“In order to be on a par with the big clubs we must prove something on the pitch. I hope the team can have a positive campaign and fight it out with everyone.

“Usually they say the favourites are those who did well last year – Juventus, Milan, Inter, Lazio and Udinese. However, this term we’re starting from scratch and I think everyone has a chance to prove themselves.

“I feel at home here and am starting from scratch on a personal level too. I had left Roma 13 years ago and now want to do something new for the fans and players. I hope to fix and improve those things that went badly and play football the way it ought to be played.”
