The Rossoneri have a strong tradition of fielding Dutch players and De Jong is their latest after his transfer from Manchester City.

“When I watched Milan in the 1980s and the 90s, I dreamt of coming here to play for them,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“I’m finally here at Milan and therefore I must thank the Dutchmen like Marco Van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard and Clarence Seedorf.”

Milan have made some big squad changes this summer, but the midfielder is confident that success will be a part of their future.

“I want to help Milan win,” added the 27-year-old. “Milan are in a transitional phase. They’ve sold their best players and the senators have also left.

“We have a young squad that needs to be built again, but I’m happy to be a part of this project.”

The international was also keen to get a taste of the Derby della Madonnina – a game where he will come up against a close friend.

“I played in the Manchester derby, but the Milan derby is a different thing,” he added. “Inter’s Wesley Sneijder, one of my best pals, has told me a lot about it.”
