AVB: Europa League 'very important'

Ahead of hosting Lazio on Thursday, Tottenham manager Andre Villas Boas has made it clear he's taking the Europa League very seriously.

The 34-year-old tactician won the competition with Porto in 2011 and believes repeating the feat with Spurs would constitute one of the greatest achievements in the London club's history.

“This competition is very important,” 'AVB' told the club's official website.

“It's tough, you have to play 15 games before you reach the final, so it's hard and strenuous and the best teams out of the Champions League are playing.

“It gives access to the European Super Cup and, for me, I always thought it was a prestigious competition and it should be promoted like that because after the Cup Winners’ Cup disappeared, it is not only about the Champions League.

“If we can win a trophy, that represents a lot for Tottenham Hotspur's history as well and would be something really special.”

Vladimir Petkovic takes his on form Biancocelesti side to White Hart Lane on Thursday night, for one of the opening fixtures in Group J. The game kicks off at 20.05 UK time.

Lazio have a 100 per cent record after three fixtures in Serie A this season. Villas Boas only collected his first win as Spurs boss against Reading on Sunday, after a loss and two draws.
