The Nerazzurri came away with a crucial victory despite the fact that they had Yuto Nagatomo dismissed early in the second half.

“We deserved to win,” stated the midfielder. “I think it was one of our best games of the season and we deserved to win.

“There was only one team on the pitch, especially after Nagatomo got sent off. Inter played defensively, they were good but lucky as well.”

Inter took an early lead and Milan thought they had equalised thanks to a splendid strike from the Italian international. It was ruled out however for a foul of Samir Handanovic.

“It’s a shame about the disallowed goal,” Montolivo added. “On the pitch, the impression I had was that it should have stood.

“It’s disappointing because it was a great goal, from far out and a tough shot to make. It’s tough because we deserved it. We played really well.”

The former Fiorentina player also believed that his side should have been awarded a late penalty at San Siro.

“The penalty shout with Robinho was a certainty. Regardless of how strong the contact was, the intention was clear and it should have been punished…

“Now we have the international break and then we’ll get back to work against Lazio and we have to start getting points.

“If we had six or seven points extra we could take a hit like this, but we have so few now and we didn’t need this defeat.”

Milan are 11th in the table after collecting just seven points from the 21 on offer.
