The Milan midfielder had not featured due to injury over the summer until today’s World Cup qualifier.

“My last game with the Azzurri was the Euro 2012 Final, so I really wanted to do well this evening,” he told Rai Sport.

Montolivo has always insisted he is not a trequartista, but was again played behind the strikers by Cesare Prandelli.

“My position is not easy to interpret in our midfield. In the first half we played well. It was not an easy victory, but a deserved one, as in internationals the level is always going to be high.

“I must also admit Gigi Buffon did well to save us on a few occasions.”
