Alessandro Del Piero was “clearly very happy” with his debut goal, but warned Sydney FC teammates they must step up their game.

The former Juventus and Italy legend curled in a splendid free kick today (see video) for his first A-League goal, although it was not enough to prevent a 3-2 home defeat against Newcastle United Jets.

“Clearly I am very happy about the goal, but I am not remotely happy with the fact it didn’t help the team to victory,” said Alex.

“I hope this can be the first in a long series of goals. During the game we woke up too late and at the end were unable to get it back on level terms.

“It will be necessary to immediately start approaching matches a different way. In order to do better, we will now watch the footage of the game over and over again.

“We must understand what isn’t going right and get back to winning from our next match.”

There was a gesture from Juventus, whose official Twitter account congratulated Del Piero on his debut goal with Sydney.
