Petkovic: 'Lazio are immature'

Vladimir Petkovic concedes Lazio “should’ve finished the game earlier” after conceding a late Panathinaikos equaliser.

The Biancocelesti had taken the lead with minimal effort, making the most of a comical own goal, but were caught out in the final minutes.

“Yes, there is bitterness, as we should’ve finished the game earlier,” said the Coach after this 1-1 draw in Athens.

“You can tell from these incidents that we are not mature enough. We had the chances to secure the result and were too naïve. This is a warning, we have got to play for 90 minutes.

“It’s true we were trying to win without pushing ourselves 100 per cent. I rested some players who have been working very hard, but the others must take their chances better. Otherwise they aren’t going to fight their way into the starting XI.”

Despite the result, Lazio are still top of the group after Maribor and Tottenham drew 1-1.

“Miroslav Klose? He is a professional and showed how much he cares about the team by coming to Athens with us. I don’t know yet if he’ll be available on Sunday.”

Play was halted for a couple of minutes, as there were scuffles outside the stadium between Panathinaikos fans and police, so tear gas floated into the arena.

“Our eyes were burning and we didn’t understand why,” said Petkovic. “Our goalkeeper asked for an explanation and nobody knew for sure what was happening.”
