Walter Mazzarri compliments Torino, but concedes Napoli threw away the victory today. “The game was finished.”

The Partenopei had been 1-0 up with an early Edinson Cavani goal, but fell away badly towards the end and a terrible Salvatore Aronica backpass gifted the equaliser in stoppages.

“Compliments to Torino for causing us problems,” Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia after the 1-1 draw at the San Paolo.

“We are paying the price for such a packed fixture list, as we must improve and grow. We had the chances to close the result. The game was finished, so it’s a shame we conceded.

“It was a difficult match, Torino played well and we were naïve to concede that equaliser so late. We have to improve before we can compete with the top teams.”

Cavani made his comeback from injury and scored the goal, but overall Napoli were sluggish.

“He did well, but is not as sharp as usual. The same was true of Marek Hamsik. We had a few counter-attacks and there was a lot of space to run into, but we made bad choices in the final third.

“Hamsik missed the chance to make it 2-0 and right now everything seems to be going wrong. Aronica’s error? It’s like a goalkeeping mistake, you have to stay calm, but this is football.

“The lads know that they must keep pressing and attacking until they are at least 3-0 up. We thought that we had won, and we practically had, but were penalised by incidents.”

Mazzarri was not on the bench when the goal went in, as he had been sent off a few minutes earlier for dissent.
