Palermo have sensationally crashed out of the Coppa Italia with a 2-1 home defeat to 10-man Serie B side Hellas Verona.

The Rosanero welcomed Hellas to the Stadio Barbera in this Fourth Round tie and the action came thick and fast with two goals in the opening seven minutes.

Palermo had taken the lead when Eran Zahavi, Igor Budan and Luigi Giorgi combined for the latter to fire in a right-foot shot.

Moments later the Sicilian defence was caught napping and Andrea Cocco burst past Mauro Cetto for an angled drive to draw the Serie B side level.

Verona thought their chances of qualification were hit hard when going down to 10 men, as Fabrizio Cacciatore was booked and then red carded for dissent.

However, it was Hellas who scored just four minutes later thanks to a howler from Carlos Labrin, who cleared the ball on to the body of Daniele Cacia to ricochet into the net.

Despite laying siege to 10-man Verona in the final stages, Palermo were unable to get the game back on track and crash out of the Coppa Italia. Hellas Verona go through to face Inter in the Fifth Round next month.

Palermo 1-2 Hellas Verona

Scorers: Giorgi 6 (P), Cocco 7 (HV), Cacia 72 (HV)

Sent off: Cacciatore 68 (HV)
