Atalanta are braced for the worst after Guido Marilungo was stretchered off in tears just weeks after his return from a six-month injury lay-off.

The former Italian Under-21 international striker snapped a ligament in his right knee back in March and was out of action for six months.

He only recently made his comeback and had started today’s Coppa Italia 3-1 win over Cesena, but caught his studs in the turf and seemed to twist his right knee.

Marilungo was stretchered off in tears and the initial reports suggest he may well have damaged the same ligament again.

"He has probably broken his anterior cruciate ligament. That's the initial consensus from the medical staff," noted Coach Stefano Colantuono.

“We dedicate this victory to Guido Marilungo, hoping to see him back on the pitch soon. Forza Guido,” wrote teammate Ezequiel Schelotto on Twitter.
