Fiorentina have unveiled Italian international Giuseppe Rossi following his January move from Villarreal.

The striker signed for the Tuscan club on Friday despite the fact that he hasn’t played since October 2011 because of a recurring knee ligament injury which has required two operations.

“I would have made this move sooner, even last summer,” the player, who has reportedly cost an initial €10m, stated.

“I’m happy to be at Fiorentina. They are the only side who came forward with facts and not just with words. That was very important to me.

“I like the Viola project, a lot. I want to be a part of it. There are many youngsters here, but also players of experience. And we all know that Fiorentina are playing the best football in Italy.

“I can’t wait to start playing alongside Stevan Jovetic and Luca Toni, great players.”

Rossi should be back in action around March time, but the former Manchester United forward is refusing to set himself a deadline.

“I don’t have a particular date in mind for my return,” he continued. “My knee is stable right now, but it needs strengthening and it can’t be rushed.

“I hope to get back to full fitness as soon as possible so that I can play for the Viola fans. Things are going well.

“Retiring? I’ve never thought about quitting. Being a footballer is the only thing that I know how to do.

“I didn’t work too well after my first injury because there was too much stress. I chose to return to America to recover with tranquillity.”

Rossi, born in America to Italian parents, has only played six months of his career in Italy during a loan spell at Parma in 2007.

“I’ve spent a lot of time abroad and I was happy, but I’m content that I will be playing in Italy again.”

Rossi was a regular in the Italian national side before his injury problems and he admits the Azzurri are in his thoughts.

“The national team is certainly an objective, but I have to get fit before anything else. The key thing is that I get back to being 100 per cent.”
