Zeman slams Stekelenburg

Roma Coach Zdenek Zeman attacked Maarten Stekelenburg, as a move to Fulham seems inevitable, but is not troubled by Mattia Destro’s injury.

The Dutch international shot-stopper slammed Zeman and the club this week, claiming it was “completely pointless” to sign Mauro Goicoechea in the summer.

“I think it was an inopportune interview with many things he got wrong. He is still a Roma player and must be at the disposal of Roma. Don’t forget after the Parma game he was injured for a month,” replied Zeman in a Press conference.

“Unfortunately when there is a lack of discipline, there is a lack of team spirit. It is difficult to work at Roma, especially as journalists tend to write about incidents that occur behind closed doors. We’ve got no rules at the moment and every now and then something happens that shouldn’t.”

Stekelenburg has been repeatedly linked with Fulham and it seems as if this latest row with the Coach will push the transfer through.

“I am a Coach for them, not for me. I asked Stekelenburg to be more involved with the team, as he lives in an isolated manner and only speaks English, which not many of his teammates do.”

There was more bad news this week, as Destro was ruled out for up to two months by a meniscus injury.

“I have enough strikers,” shrugged Zeman. “The squad is not at its best, as we haven’t been able to train the way we wanted to due to the weather and the flu epidemic.

“Vasilis Torosidis is in the squad and ready for action.”

Zeman also wished Jose Mourinho a happy 50th birthday in his own inimitable way.

“Mourinho represents a type of Coach they call ‘winning.’ For me, he’s more of a character, but one who will certainly remain in football history.”
