Italy or Argentina for Icardi

The Italian Football Federation insists that Mauro Icardi will not be pressurised into choosing an international career with Italy or Argentina.

The uncapped 19-year-old was born in Argentina, but can also play for the Azzurri given that he holds an Italian passport.

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli last week suggested that the FIGC have already spoken to the centre-forward about his future.

“There will never be any force from the Federation,” President Giancarlo Abete noted to GR Parlamento.

“It is only right that any player, who has the option to play for two national sides, makes his decision freely.

“The independent desire of the player is what counts.”

Prandelli has opened the door to “new Italians” since his appointment in 2010 as the caps given to Amauri, Cristian Ledesma, Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, Ezequiel Schelotto and Thiago Motta testify.

Icardi, formerly of Barcelona, has seven goals in Serie A this term – four of those came on Sunday in the 6-0 Pescara win.
