Cagliari boycott moved Milan game?

Cagliari’s game with Milan has officially been moved to Turin, but the Sardinians are threatening not to play on Sunday afternoon.

Once again, the Is Arenas has failed security checks and is not considered capable of handling a big game with a huge influx of travelling opposition supporters.

Their tie with Juventus was moved to the Stadio Tardini in Parma, while Sunday’s game with Milan has been relocated to the Stadio Olimpico in Turin.

“I can’t believe we are again being forced to play away from home against a top team. Can someone explain this to us? Are we obligated to go there?” wrote Radja Nainggolan on Twitter.

Davide Astori also joined the protest via Twitter, with support from Milan fans who also consider the switch unfair.

The Mayor of Quartu Sant’Elena, Mauro Contini, also published a statement on the latest chaos around the Is Arenas.

“The decision not to allow Cagliari to play at the Is Arenas was made by the authorities to guarantee public order and safety. It was made despite all our efforts and the proposals from the Lega Calcio to at least have season ticket holders let in.

“Up until now I have maintained my silence in a delicate situation, hoping for a positive outcome. I will reveal the authorities maintained their positions on the safety of the Is Arenas. They were totally closed to any suggestions and I cannot agree with that, as it could have unpredictable consequences.

“Despite all this, I launch my appeal for all the institutions to find a solution that can ensure Cagliari-Milan is played at the Is Arenas, even with limited entry.

“I also invite those who are responsible for communication not to irresponsibly foment the anger of the fans.”

There are reports Cagliari could stage a protest and refuse to attend the game on Sunday afternoon.

It is telling that several hours after the move to Turin became official, the Cagliari website does not mention this change of venue at all.

It has been updated with a match report from this afternoon’s friendly against the Primavera youth team.
