Atalanta’s new signing Franco Brienza has blasted ex-Palermo general manager Pietro Lo Monaco. “He forced me and others to leave.”

Brienza had only joined the Sicilians in the summer, moving from Siena along with Coach Giuseppe Sannino and director Giorgio Perinetti.

When Sannino and Perinetti were axed after just three Serie A rounds, general manager Lo Monaco revolutionised the squad.

However, this week Lo Monaco resigned and Perinetti returned with new Coach Alberto Malesani.

“Igor Budan and Luigi Giorgi say the same thing, that Lo Monaco chopped the heads off all Perinetti’s ‘men.’

“Igor was very close to President Maurizio Zamparini, while Giorgi and I were close to Perinetti. Therefore we didn’t fit into the project anymore,” explained Brienza.

“Lo Monaco said I asked to be sold? It’s too easy to put it that way. He moved everything so he could force me and others to leave.

“We had already been in talks with Atalanta for several days, but then director Pierpaolo Marino did well to take advantage of the chaos at Palermo.

“I was convinced to come here by Atalanta’s history and the belief of Stefano Colantuono and Marino.”
