Fabio Borini is racing against time to regain fitness for the European Under-21 Championship, as the Liverpool and Italy striker battles his injury demons.

The forward has struggled with a series of setbacks over the past year and is sidelined by a shoulder injury that effectively ended his season.

“He had surgery on the left shoulder with the same professor who operated on the right shoulder. This happened around three weeks ago,” agent Marco De Marchi told TMW.

“It has been a really unlucky year with two serious injuries. Problems with both shoulders have effectively kept him off the field for six months, while he also played for six weeks with a broken foot.

“However, he is a tough guy and will not get knocked down. He’s working harder than ever to come back for the end of the season.

“He wants to play the last few games with Liverpool so he can be ready for the Euros. Of course, then the Coach will have to decide whether to call him or not.”

Italy are among the favourites for the European Under-21 Championships, which are played in Israel from June 5-18.

The Azzurrini are in Group A with England, Norway and hosts Israel.
