Malta manager Pietro Ghedin insists this country’s football is improving and prepares to face Italy, “one of the top five teams in the world.”

These nations go head-to-head on Tuesday evening in a World Cup qualifier and Ghedin is familiar with the Azzurri set-up, as he was assistant manager to Cesare Maldini, Dino Zoff and Giovanni Trapattoni.

“Italy are strong, we know that,” said Ghedin in his Press conference.

“Am I supposed to put two markers on Mario Balotelli and Andrea Pirlo? There’s no point, as they are not the only dangerous players.

“Italy are one of the top five teams in the world. Cesare Prandelli is doing exceptional work and deserves all the praise.

“We are small and must simply try to do well, that is all.”

Malta were beaten 6-0 by Bulgaria on Friday and have lost all four of their games in the World Cup qualifying group.

“Our Federation has renewed, is creating many synthetic pitches, looking after the youth academies and preparing for the future.

“My rapport with the directors is excellent, otherwise they would’ve already fired me! We aren’t getting the results and it’s frustrating, I know, but we have to continue along this path.”
