Ballardini: 'Today is fundamental'

Genoa Coach Davide Ballardini admits today’s game with Atalanta “will be fundamental” for their chances of staying in Serie A.

It kicks off at Marassi at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT), click here for a match preview.

“This is the first truly fundamental game of the season,” warned the Coach. “I haven’t decided yet whether the defence will be three or four players, but what counts even more than tactics is the psychological approach to the match.”

The Grifone dropped into the bottom two last week, as they are in joint penultimate place with Palermo and now two points adrift of Siena in the next safety spot.

Marco Borriello and Juan Manuel Vargas are both suspended, so there will be a few changes in attack.

“Losing Borriello is a big problem and we’ll feel his absence, but I saw Antonio Floro Flores look ready for action in training. Andrea Bertolacci and Bosko Jankovic can also give their contribution.”

Ballardini maintains Genoa do not deserve to be in the relegation zone, though was not content with last week’s 1-1 draw against rivals Sampdoria.

“My Genoa only disappointed me twice: in the Derby and against Napoli.”

Genoa squad for Atalanta: Antonelli, Bertolacci, Bovo, Cassani, Donnarumma, Ferronetti, Floro Flores, Frey, Granqvist, Kucka, Immobile, Jankovic, Jorquera, Manfredini, Matuzalem, Moretti, Nadarevic, Pisano, Portanova, Rigoni, Tozser, Tzorvas
