The Swiss international eventually had his most prolific ever season, scoring seven Serie A goals and two in the Europa League.

“I wanted to leave in January and I had some excellent offers, so I was very close to joining Milan,” he told Swiss website Blick.

“The President and director of sport at Napoli did not want to let me go. They guaranteed that the club believed in me.

“In early March I had the chance to start several games and this allowed me to get back my confidence. It made everything much easier.”

Napoli have a new Coach in Rafa Benitez with a different tactical system, so could they field Swiss internationals Dzemaili, Gokhan Inler and Valon Behrami simultaneously?

“It depends on the Coach. I’d have to play as a trequartista, which is not my preferred position, but when I did perform there it was successful,” concluded the 27-year-old.
