The Azzurrini have already qualified for the semi-final thanks to back-to-back victories over England and the hosts.

“It is important for a striker to get back to scoring goals, but considering it was crucial that we win tonight, it meant even more,” the Bologna forward told Rai Sport.

Gabbiadini had not scored for the Nazionale since a 2-0 win over Hungary in November 2011, firing blanks in eight games.

“We did well to bring home the points, as it was not easy going in. It’s pleasing to score, of course, but the primary objective is to take the team all the way. We want to win the Euros.”

Italy will face one of Spain, Germany, Holland or Russia in the semi-final of the European Under-21 Championship.

“We have the opportunity to do well, even if it’ll be difficult. We play every game as if it were our last. Now we’ve got three to go and will treat them all like Cup Finals.”
