Federico Balzaretti knows that the only way to get to the World Cup next summer will be to perform well at Roma.

The left-back joined the Giallorossi last summer from Palermo, but a dip in form saw him fall out of the Giro Azzurro.

“Everyone dreams of playing for the national team,” stated the Euro 2012 player. “I was involved in the squad for two years, but I haven't been called up for the last six months.

“Clearly I'm aiming to be at the World Cup, but it's all about baby steps. We need to take it one step at a time and first achieve success as a team.”

The 31-year-old was considered as a fine signing for the Giallorossi, but he wasn’t happy with his first capital campaign.

“I really want to bounce back because I had a terrible season,” he added. “It's hard when you disappoint your teammates and the supporters.

“I'll try to come back by rediscovering my self-confidence and putting into practice everything I did in previous years, that I wasn't able to do last season.

“I've worked all summer and this is also important – being able to train when it's tough helps you to avoid injuries and rediscover fitness.”
