Icardi: I have much to learn

Mauro Icardi admits he still needs to prove his worth after completing a summer move from Sampdoria to Inter.

“I’d say that Inter is a starting point for me,” the Argentine told Sky Sport Italia from the club’s pre-season training retreat.

“At Sampdoria I did well and arrived here, but now I have to do well here. In football you’re always learning and I have a way to go.

“Boss Walter Mazzarri has told me to work hard. From his first day here he spoke to all of us. I don’t know what he told the other players, but I know what he said to me and it was this.”

The striker became a first team regular at Samp last season, but he will face competition from the likes of Rodrigo Palacio and Diego Milito in the new term.

“Everyone that plays the game wants to be a starter, but at Inter there’s so much competition with so many great players here,” stated the 20-year-old.

“Palacio and Milito are both great players who play the same role I do. What I need to do is follow the way they train, observe their movements and learn from them.”

Inter finished some way off Scudetto winners Juventus last season and Icardi accepts that the Old Lady will start in pole position for the title this time around too.

“Last year they were favourites for the title and I believe it’s the same again this year because they’re the champions and have strengthened their team,” he added. “We just have to give our all.”
