Luca Toni explains he chose Serie A newcomers Hellas Verona because “I can lend a hand to this team.”

The veteran centre-forward was no longer needed at Fiorentina and joined newly-promoted Verona as a free agent.

“Would I return to the Viola as a director? I’m not thinking about that right now, as I am only focused on my playing career,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“That is why I chose Hellas, as I can lend a hand to this team.”

Toni has effectively been replaced in the Fiorentina line-up by former Bayern Munich hitman Mario Gomez.

“Gomez is a striker who tends to move around more along the front line, while I am more of a ‘fox in the box’ type of player. He isn’t Fiorentina’s only big signing, as they’ve done great work on the market this summer.”
