Insigne: 'A wonderful debut goal'

Lorenzo Insigne confessed to “a wonderful sensation” scoring his debut Italy senior goal and working with Gonzalo Higuain.

“It was a wonderful sensation to score my first goal for the Azzurri. I always try those shots in training with Napoli and it went well tonight,” said the 22-year-old after a 2-1 friendly defeat to Argentina.

As Mario Balotelli and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo are suspended for the World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria in September, Insigne has a good chance of playing.

“I always respect the choices of the Coach and I’m happy when called upon. I am slowly gaining confidence,” he told RAI Sport.

Insigne is also hoping for more playing time at club level under new Napoli boss Rafa Benitez.

“Benitez is an excellent Coach and I certainly have much to learn from him, as he won so much and works well with young players.

“I didn’t get to meet Leo Messi and it was a shame he wasn’t here today, as I wanted to exchange shirts with him. I swapped shirts with my Napoli teammate Federico Fernandez instead.

“Obviously at Napoli we are very happy to have Higuain here, as he is a great striker and in the first few days of training we could already see what he is capable of.

“I think Higuain and Cavani are both great forwards, albeit different ones.”

Insigne was unsure what experience of the last 24 hours was more exciting – scoring his debut goal or meeting Pope Francis.

“Meeting the Pope doesn’t happen every day. I got goosebumps when I saw him and I still need to fully realise it happened.”
