Alessandro Diamanti slammed the door on transfer gossip by revealing he’s about to sign a long-term Bologna contract.

The Italy international had been linked with the likes of Juventus and Milan, but opted to remain at the Stadio Dall’Ara.

“We all wanted this renewal – me, the club and the city. The deal has almost been finalised. I will tie myself to this club and this city for a long time,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“Have I missed an opportunity for a step up? I don’t think I’m missing out on anything. The only reason I might have wanted to join a big club was because everyone said I couldn’t do it!

“There are those who have as their objectives the Champions League and the Scudetto, but when you lead Bologna to safety it feels like winning the Champions League.

“I spent much of my career in Serie C, so it’s wonderful for me to play for Bologna. Hopefully in future I’ll be able to win something here too.”

The season did not get off to a good start, as Bologna were beaten 3-0 by Napoli.

“We always try to do our best, but tonight Napoli put us under in every respect and we have to compliment them.”
