Serie A Team of Week 2

After another weekend full of spills, thrills and goals, Dave Taylor picks his best XI from the Week 2 action.

Andrea Consigli [Atalanta]

The master of his area won absolutely everything in the air. Only made two real saves which included a testing header from Danilo D’Ambrosio because he was always in the right position to make the others look incidental. Commanding.

Douglas Maicon [Roma]

Put in several threatening crosses and his persistence paid off as he opened the scoring in the second half. After his run down the right, his cross looped over a powerless Rafael after being deflected off Fabrizio Cacciatore. Prominent.

Hugo Campagnaro [Inter]

What a superb signing the Boss has turned out to be. Always in control with power and an intelligence that foreclosed any danger before it got to be anywhere near threatening. Dominant.

Leonardo Bonucci [Juventus]

The pick of the defence, won all his aerial battles with absolute determination. Also found time to produce two assists, his first for Arturo Vidal’s second, while his perfect pass over the top allowed Mirko Vucinic to score. Influential.

Yuto Nagatomo [Inter]

Patrolled the left flank and gave Catania warning of his potency when it needed a fabulous reaction save to stop him scoring with a diving header. Needless to say he did score later. Athletic.

Miralem Pjanic [Roma]

Tested Rafael on several occasions before scoring the second goal with an awesome chip after fooling the ‘keeper with fabulous feint. Worked very well with his teammates and also set up Adem Ljajic’s stunning debut goal. Impressive.

Marek Hamsik [Napoli]

Once again Man of the Match with several defence-splitting passes and once again two cracking goals. His first a screamer off the inside of the post, his second emphasised his alertness as he exploited a gift from a defender. Outstanding.

Arturo Vidal [Juventus]

A new season but the same old Arturo. Two chances and two goals. The first slotted home with the outside of his foot. His second, equally as sublime, saw him control the ball before beating the advancing Federico Marchetti. Dazzling.

Alberto Aquilani [Fiorentina]

Opened the scoring with a clever stooping header and looked to get into dangerous positions throughout. Also produced an assist for a Giuseppe Rossi goal, while almost scoring again with a thunderbolt that skimmed the bar. Persistent.

Gonzalo Higuain [Napoli]

Always menacing and hit the post while producing the perfect assist for Jose Callejon. In the second half he continuously threatened and ruthlessly exploited a rebound, after superb work with Lorenzo Insigne saw him stitch home his first goal. Gonzolastic.

Alberto Paloschi [Chievo]

Still co-owned by Milan, he was sharpness personified and consistently worried the Napoli defence with two superbly-taken goals and a post. His second was utter class as he left two defenders for dead before nutmegging the ’keeper. Determined.

Special mentions: Carlos Tevez [Juventus], Francesco Totti [Roma], Daniele De Rossi [Roma], Lorenzo Insigne [Napoli], Mario Gomez [Fiorentina], Giuseppe Rossi [Fiorentina], Rafael [Verona], Guglielmo Stendardo [Atalanta], Rodrigo Palacio [Inter].
