Bulgaria Coach Luboslav Penev believes his team “deserved to win” in their 1-0 defeat to Italy.

The Azzurri emerged with all three points thanks to Alberto Gilardino’s header at the Stadio Barbera in Palermo last night.

“We deserved to win,” insisted Penev in his Press conference. Gigi Buffon performed several world class reaction saves from close range to keep Italy’s clean sheet.

“We played perfectly from a tactical standpoint. We had to score a goal, to bulge the net, but we did everything else.

“I take into account that we weren’t precise in these situations, as even a monument like Buffon can be beaten, as long as the ball goes in the net.”

Bulgaria are still second in Group B on 10 points to Italy’s 17, followed by the Czech Republic, Denmark and Armenia on nine.

Penev’s next test is against Malta on Tuesday night, but the group was thrown into disarray by Armenia’s shock 2-1 win in Prague.

“Now we start preparations for Malta. We will try to win our games. There are still three matches to go, but with this result the Czech Republic certainly have less chance of qualifying, which can be an advantage for us.

“We must continue to believe, as the World Cup target is still within our reach.”
