Gremio confirmed Edu Vargas will return to Napoli in January after he scored a brace for Chile against Spain.

The 23-year-old striker was a flop in his debut Serie A season, so returned to South America on loan and has rediscovered his confidence.

Vargas hit the headlines last night when netting twice in Chile’s 2-2 friendly draw with World and European Champions Spain.

Vargas hit the headlines last night when netting twice in Chile’s 2-2 friendly draw with World and European Champions Spain.

“Vargas is on loan with Gremio until the end of December, but after that it will be impossible to keep him,” confirmed director of sport Rui Costa in El Mercurio.

“There is no buy-out option because Napoli did not allow us one. I think it’s only normal that a Coach like Rafa Benitez wants to make the most of a player going through such an extraordinary moment of form.”

Since moving to Gremio on loan, Vargas has scored five goals in 17 games, while his record for Chile is now eight in 20 caps.

He made 28 appearances in a Napoli jersey, but only scored in one – bagging a hat-trick in the 4-0 Europa League victory over AIK Stockholm.
