Borussia Dortmund star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was close to joining Napoli, but “Rafa Benitez preferred Jose Maria Callejon.”

The hitman will step into the Stadio San Paolo tomorrow evening in a Champions League tie, but it could’ve been a very different situation.

“It’s true, Napoli wanted Aubameyang,” agent Oscar Damiani Junior told TMW.

“He was the name at the top of the list written up by the directors. Then Benitez arrived and preferred Callejon.

“In football that can happen, as perhaps the Spanish Coach didn’t know him very well. After all, Aubameyang was playing for Saint-Etienne and not Real Madrid and a tactician can’t know every player well.

“He probably already knew Callejon and preferred to focus on the Spaniard.”

Aubameyang has history in Serie A, as he was part of the Milan youth academy, but has become a sensation in France and now the Bundesliga with five goals in as many games.

“It was difficult to predict such a great start, but I knew he’d do well. He is a quality player who is constantly improving. He’s also part of a side that, like Napoli, plays attacking football.

“This is going to be a great game between two excellent teams and two wonderful sets of fans. It is open to any result, but on home turf Napoli could get the better of Borussia.”
