Mazzarri: 'I have Inter doubts'

Walter Mazzarri admits he has “doubts” over his line-up against Torino, but was impressed with Inter’s recent performances.

The Nerazzurri visit Torino on Sunday evening at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT), click here for a match preview.

There are some issues regarding the South Americans who returned from international duty late.

“If the flight is delayed, then that is nobody’s fault, so we shouldn’t fine players for that. I want to clarify that matter,” said Mazzarri at the start of his Press conference.

“Having said that, I don’t know what condition the players are in. They had light training yesterday and seemed to be ok, so today with the little time I have, I’ll try to evaluate their condition and which team can give me the most guarantees.”

Inter need to get back on track after a 3-0 home defeat to Roma at San Siro.

“It was the first defeat of my tenure, but we also saw a performance that was not so negative. We paid the price for errors and did some positive things too. This team has to grow overall, but is doing well and that is the most important thing for me.

“Tomorrow will be another difficult match in an atmosphere with passionate fans. Torino are very organised and in my view deserved more than the points they currently have. It’s another test, but I am still confident we can put in a good performance.

“They have individual talents like Alessio Cerci who can do something at any moment, but we must be wary of the whole side, as they play good football.

“If you want to be positive and take the initiative, then you are going to leave yourself open to the occasional counter-attack. Clearly, you have to be careful and maintain balance.

“I’d like us to be more clinical with the final pass, as in the last few games we dropped points because we didn’t score enough goals when in control.”

Ricky Alvarez is injured, so will Mateo Kovacic start in more attacking role behind the forwards?

“It is one of the options, yes. Ricky was one of those in the best form and at this moment, so it’s a shame he picked up this injury.

“I tried Fredy Guarin behind the strikers in America, but it didn’t really suit his characteristics. I won’t rule anything out, but in this case I think Guarin is progressing well in his current position and trying to make those movements automatic, so it would be a mistake to put other ideas in his head.

“I have to evaluate the condition of everyone, so I do have doubts. As things stand, unless something happens, the only one certain to start is Rodrigo Palacio.”

This will be the first Inter match under new Indonesian owner Erick Thohir, who bought 70 per cent of the club from Massimo Moratti this week.

“We have total faith in President Moratti and that he makes every decision only in the interests of the club. I am always motivated, regardless of who is the patron, and I am trying to drum that attitude into the players too.

“So far we haven’t seen anything different within the club, as President Moratti is still there and so are his advisors. Those strategies might change in future, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

Mazzarri was also asked about the growing problem of clubs and Federations dealing with players on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.

“I think football has to be done differently and there are things the players should not divulge easily. It doesn’t matter if you’re old-fashioned or not. However, if this is the way the world works now, we have to accept it and take the necessary precautions.”
