Francesco Guidolin saw “improvements” in Udinese’s away form, despite the 1-0 defeat to Milan.
“I believe we are a team who absolutely need to improve the quality of our away performances, as those have always been bad this season,” he told Sky Sport Italia after a fourth consecutive away defeat.
“Having said that, in terms of determination, courage, going forward and confidence I think there were steps forward. Even if it wasn’t sufficient to get a result, it was an improvement.
“Milan are a strong side, certainly stronger than Udinese, although they had a few difficulties at the moment and will face Barcelona next week. An Udinese in good shape could’ve won here. As we are not as sharp as last season, we lost.
“We have to try to work on this and continue those improvements we saw this evening. We changed to three different systems during the game, but have to improve the way we move the ball around, be more precise in the final third and make fewer mistakes.”
Luis Muriel was a second half substitute after returning with fatigue from international duty.
“Muriel arrived the other night from Colombia and if he doesn’t train then he tends to struggle. I expected him to give us vivacity for 30 minutes or so, which is what he did, and he nearly scored. He is young and will improve.
“I prefer to have conceded a goal on the counter rather than put in the performance we did against Atalanta, where we were pegged back constantly and conceded on a set play.
“You have to take some risks and push forward, though we have to do better and not give the ball away so cheaply.
“Our team changes every year, but it’s also true there have been changes during the season due to injuries, especially in defence.”
