Mehdi Benatia is delighted that he and fellow Roma centre-back Leandro Castan have silenced their critics.

There were doubts about the Giallorossi defence at the start of this season, but they have conceded just once in eight games so far.

“I read the criticism,” the Moroccan told Roma Channel. “People didn’t even wait for us to lose a game. Criticism is part of our job, but that criticism has to be right.

“Castan hasn’t had a bad game yet, but the Coach isn’t bothered by what journalists say, all that matters is what happens on the pitch.

“Our defensive strength is down to the work of the whole team,” he added of a side that have a 100 per cent record in Serie A. “We have to continue on this road.”

Benatia will take on his past this weekend when Roma travel to Udinese – the club who sold him during the summer.

“It will be a special game for me, but I will have to put sentiments to one side for 90 minutes,” he continued.

“I’ve spoken to Udinese striker Antonio Di Natale and it will be tough for him against me. It won’t be like it was in training – I’m different in an actual game.”
