Neto almost hung up gloves

Fiorentina ‘keeper Norberto Neto has revealed he considered quitting the game after some problematic years in Tuscany.

The goalkeeper has had his critics since his arrival and there were doubts when the club decided to make him their first choice this term after releasing Emiliano Viviano.

“I wanted to go back to Brazil and retire from the game,” he told Il Giornale on Friday after playing in just six top-flight games across three seasons. “But you then reflect and start again.

“I also decided to play on because I wanted to emerge in Florence.

“I just continued on my path thanks to the faith of everyone. I never felt like I was a gamble, I know I was given a great opportunity and I couldn’t pass up on that.

“To stay here for three years without playing was tough…”

Neto, born in July 1989, has appeared in 15 games so far this season.
