Ventura: 'Toro in history too'

Giampiero Ventura was proud Torino “wrote a small page in the history books” by stopping the ‘perfect’ Roma.

The Giallorossi had won all 10 games this season before tonight’s 1-1 draw in Turin.

“Roma never had a real shot on target from open play, as they only really threatened from set pieces. For a side that won 10 in a row and had scored 24 goals, that’s an achievement,” Ventura told Sky Sport Italia.

“It means Torino worked very hard and every player was ready to help their teammate out. Despite the injury crisis, I think we deserved the draw today. We forced Morgan De Sanctis to perform some stunning saves and could’ve made more of two or three counter-attacks.

“I am happy for the players, as this team has earned a lot less than it deserved to over the course of this season. Partly that was down to our lack of experience, but they needed to write this small page in the history books and stopped the team that had been considered ‘unstoppable.’

“To be honest, I was pretty confident we’d get a result. Sven Goran Eriksson’s Lazio had nine wins in a row and I interrupted them at Cagliari. Am I a party-pooper? It was a very long time ago!”

Ventura showed how much it meant to him by smashing his fist against the roof of the bench after Alessio Cerci’s equaliser.

“The bench had padding on it. I checked before punching it!”

The Coach returned to his audacious 4-2-4 formation, albeit dropping Ciro Immobile from the starting XI.

“We simply needed more of a workhorse like Riccardo Meggiorini and Immobile tends to give his best coming off the bench, whereas Paulo Barreto doesn’t. Cesare Bovo was on the bench tonight, but he was in no way fit to play.

“If I could’ve done, I would’ve played like this against Napoli too. These teams have to be faced this way. Others are less suited to that approach, so we ‘learned’ to play 3-5-2. I think that now we’re in a position to use both systems.

“I am particularly pleased with this performance, as it tells the players they can do it if they want to.”
