Toni disappointed by Genoa spell

Verona’s Luca Toni has recalled his disappointing spell at Genoa ahead of Sunday’s Serie A clash between the two.

The 2006 World Cup winner was netted by the Grifone in the summer of 2010, but left to join Juventus less than six months later after just three goals in 16 League games.

“I am left with a little bit of regret,” he told Il Secolo XIX. “There was great enthusiasm when I signed, the fans expected a lot.

“There was even talk that we could challenge for a place in the top four.

“Boss Gianpiero Gasperini wanted me and I still have a great rapport with him – I’m happy that he has now returned to the club.

“Unfortunately, something broke between myself and President Enrico Preziosi. We haven’t spoken to each other since and we have gone down two separate paths.”

The 36-year-old moved to Hellas on a free transfer in the summer after his contract with Fiorentina expired.

He has five goals in nine Serie A games so far this term.
