Riccardo Montolivo has defended his actions after his dismissal in Milan’s 0-0 draw with Ajax on Wednesday.

The Italian international was shown the red card in the first half for a challenge on Christian Poulsen in the Champions League.

“My challenge was on the limit, sure, but it seems clear that it was not intentional,” the midfielder told Milan Channel.

“I wanted to get the ball. It was a normal tackle, but it saddened me that I had to leave my side with 10 men.

“It was a hard game, one compromised by my red card, but we brought out something extra.”

The Diavolo held on to get the point which they needed to be included in Monday’s draw for the last 16.

“We will be up against top sides, it would be hard to choose an opponent,” continued the former Fiorentina man.

Milan will be paired with one from Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid or Borussia Dortmund.
