Riccardo Saponara believes “Milan played and Inter won” after his surprise start in the Derby della Madonnina.

The 22-year-old made his first start in a Rossoneri jersey, but emerged with a 1-0 defeat.

“There is a bitter taste in the mouth, as we deserved more on the strength of that performance,” Saponara told Milan Channel.

“We did very well in the first half and for a large chunk of the second, but Inter only came out at the end and managed to score.

“Now we will analyse the game with clear heads, but there are good things to build on. Losing a Derby is never good, especially when Milan played and Inter won.”

The Italy Under-21 international had played only 24 minutes over two substitute appearances this season.

“The Coach told me this morning that I would start and then confirmed his decision in the afternoon.

“I was a little emotional at the beginning, but I tried to shake it off, as the team needed my help. I tried to play a lot of first-time passes, though perhaps I could’ve taken some more touches. I am working to improve and tried to help in defence.

“I think I did as much as I could this evening. I had many injury problems and gave my all, so the Coach knows what I can do.”
