Vasilis Torosidis gave Roma the 1-0 victory over Sampdoria on Radja Nainggolan’s debut, so they go on to face Juventus in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

The Giallorossi threw new buy Radja Nainggolan straight into the starting XI along with Adem Ljajic, who was banned from the Serbia national team by now-Sampdoria Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic for refusing to sing the national anthem. The Blucerchiati also rotated the squad with Enzo Maresca and Bartosz Salamon getting their season debuts.

Roma were recovering from a 3-0 mauling at the hands of Juventus and made an immediate impact. Dodo’s cross from the left found Mattia Destro, whose effort was parried from point-blank range, but Vincenzo Fiorillo could do nothing on the Vasilis Torosidis follow-up.

Pawel Wzolek burst past Nicolas Burdisso and his cross-shot flashed across the face of goal with his fellow Pole Lukasz Skorupski getting a decisive hand to it.

Nainggolan very nearly marked his Roma debut with a goal with his side-foot finish from just inside the box, but it didn’t have enough power behind it and Fiorillo was able to beat it away with an outstretched leg.

Fiorillo was again crucial with a great palm to deny Ljajic’s shot under the bar, but out-did himself with a sensational double save on Alessandro Florenzi from point-blank range.

After the restart Daniele De Rossi risked an own goal with his sliding interception to anticipate Nicola Pozzi and Skorupski smothered a Gianluca Sansone strike, as Samp were more attacking.

Ljajic had an attempt deflected wide and Gervinho failed to make the most of a dangerous counter-attack. Destro thought he had scored on 79 minutes when springing the offside trap, but he hesitated and a combination of Fiorillo and defender deflected the ball in front of an open goal.

A spectacular Torosidis lob sailed inches past the far top corner, helped along the way by a Fiorillo fingertip. In stoppages Skorupski punched away a Samp corner and Ljajic fired straight at the goalkeeper on the resulting counter.
