Rossi: 'Fiorentina believed in me'

Giuseppe Rossi said his “recovery is going well” and thanked Fiorentina for putting their faith in him.

The striker spoke to Sports Illustrated, as he is currently in New York working to recover from a knee injury.

“The recovery is going well. I’m focusing on my rehabbing here in New York. You can’t rush into things. It’s tough being away from the soccer field for so long, it’s a pain, but you have to do what you have to do to come back 100 per cent.”

Rossi was asked whether he was targeting a place in the World Cup squad, where Italy will face Uruguay, England and Costa Rica.

“I don’t like to think too far ahead, as each day is a challenge, so I’m focused on the challenges I have each day. I want to be out there again. This is just a little minor setback and we’ll see what happens.”

Despite the injury lay-off since January 6, Rossi is still Serie A top scorer with 14 goals.

“I have to thank Fiorentina for believing in me, as after two years without playing it’s tough to find a club that believes in you and will give you the opportunity to play at this level, in Serie A.

“I can only say thanks t them for believing in me and obviously I have a great team behind me. I work with a physiotherapist who is great and my family are always behind me, so that’s the basis for me coming back and to find the extra motivation to keep trying to get better, not only on the field but also off it.

“That was basically my mentality throughout this whole time I’ve been at Fiorentina.”

Pepito also described how he learned to love football through his father Fernando, who was a Coach at school level.

“My Father is my biggest mentor and introduced me to the sport. As a kid I’d have the ball at my feet, we’d go in the yard with some cones and he’d tell me to dribble.

“He coached for many years and I used to wake up every Sunday morning to watch Serie A, watch the national team play and I have the same passion.”
